(LOVE LAND IS COMMITTED TO A COMPLETELY OPEN AND INCLUSIVE CASTING PROCESS. WE WANT THE BEST PEOPLE IN THE ROLES! SO, EVERY ROLE'S ETHNICITY AND DISABILITY IS A SUGGESTION AND OPEN FOR CHANGE TO ALLOW US TO FIT THE PROPER TALENT INTO EACH ROLE.)
IVY (20-25, unspecified intellectual disability, unspecified ethnicity, female)
Ivy is a fiery young woman whose brain was severely injured in a car accident that killed her parents and younger brother when she was fifteen. She has a scar along the back of her head that continues down the side of her hairline that she’s very self-conscious about. In addition to her lost family, Ivy struggles with her lost talents, most notably playing the piano. Despite her struggles, she’s confident, rebellious, and candid (if not brutally honest). Her inflated ego, coupled with her disability, interferes with her deftness at reading social cues and maintaining interpersonal relationships. It’s Ivy’s pride, more so than the physical struggles posed by her disability, that leads to the major imbalances and hardships in her life. SIDES.
ROGER (35-45, unspecified intellectual disability, unspecified ethnicity, male)
Born in Oklahoma, Roger moved to Texas with his family when he was four. Placed in an institution at age 12, he earned unprecedented trust and respect from the administration and residents. Roger desires to please others, which often leads to unfulfillment and disappointment. His dream is to be a husband and father—in slacks and a polo, and pager on his belt, he already dresses the part. SIDES.
BART (28-35, cerebral palsy, unspecified ethnicity, male)
Despite the challenges posed by his cerebral palsy, Bart is a caretaker at the Love Land Ranch. With a master’s degree in social work, Bart constantly defends his ego by referring to his education, and clarifying the distinction between caretakers and residents. He’s insecure and hypercritical of residents, particularly Ivy, who challenges Bart’s authority and the social hierarchy. SIDES.
ARMEN (18-25, unspecified intellectual disability, unspecified ethnicity, male)
Armen has lived at the Love Land Ranch for most of his life, where his brash confidence, vulgarity, and his unyielding interest in women often get him in trouble. Similar to Ivy, Armen’s intense personality tends to ostracize and strain friendships. Roger is his closest confidante. SIDES.
JOE (35-45, unspecified autism, unspecified ethnicity, male)
“Socially integrated” his entire life, Joe is a high-functioning adult with an intellectual disability. Joe is tough and brazen against unsolicited charity and patronizing forces. “Better to be a jerk than cute,” he often says. As Roger’s suitemate, and fellow bagger at the local grocer, Joe helps Roger adapt to new environments and unfamiliar situations. SIDES.
KATIE (20-25, Down Syndrome, unspecified ethnicity, female)
Ivy's initial roommate at the Love Land Ranch, Katie has lived happily in the institution for five years. Shy and sincere, Katie is too apprehensive to act on her infatuation with Roger, beyond casual flirtation. As Roger and Ivy’s relationship blossoms, Ivy and Katie’s falters. SIDES.
MANNY (35-40, spinal muscular atrophy, unspecified ethnicity, male)
Manny lives in a group home with Joe, and, eventually, Roger. Manny has a PhD in psychology, and with the help of a computer camera that traces his eye movements, Manny creates masterful, photorealistic paintings, pixel by pixel. Manny grew up in an institution and is sympathetic to the difficulty involved in trying to integrate oneself into the community again. SIDES.
OSCAR (18, no disability specified, unspecified ethnicity, male) A misled youth from West Texas, Oscar is a high school senior who truly fancies himself a tattoo artist—despite his mediocre apprenticeship at a local parlor. Misguided and underachieving, he’s nevertheless handsome and reckless. For these reasons, he’s the epitome of Ivy’s lust. SIDES.
JEANETTE (16-18, no disability specified, unspecified ethnicity, femlae)
Jeanette is a fun-loving, fast-moving dreamer, prone to occasional trouble, but nothing beyond the scope of any bored West Texas adolescent. Ultimately, she’s upstanding and considerate of others. It’s specifically Jeanette’s overly forgiving, considerate gestures towards Ivy that skews the power dynamic in their relationship and leads it to implosion. If under 18 years of age, applicant must be an emancipated minor. SIDES.
HUNTER (35, no disability specified, unspecified ethnicity, male)
Hunter is the “MSD” (Minister to the Suffering and Disabled) at the local baptist church. Licensed by the state as a “caregiver,” Hunter ferries Love Land residents to church, where he teaches Sunday school to the “Special Section” of the worship sanctuary. After church, Hunter escorts the residents to the local department store. He dislikes this obligation, and often loses his patience and temper with the difficult residents. For this reason, Hunter appreciates and adores Roger for his ability to organize and oversee the group. SIDES.
DR. PAT KENDALL (40-70, no disability specified, unspecified ethnicity, unspecified gender)
Cool, casual, and compassionate—Dr. Kendall genuinely cares for the well-being and happiness of his residents. As the Superintendent of the Love Land Ranch, he prides himself in the safety and positive milieu that his faculty and staff is able to provide. His sincerity often interferes with his ability to look beyond his bias, and determine if someone truly belongs in the ranch. Most notably, this tragic flaw stunts the growth of many residents—like Roger—who might benefit from diversity and a more stimulating lifestyle. SIDES.
DOROTHY (36, no disability specified, unspecified ethnicity, female)
Dorothy is Ivy’s older sister. After the car accident that injured Ivy and killed their parents and brother, Dorothy is now Ivy’s only surviving blood relative. Somewhat older than Ivy, Dorothy was 23-years-old at the time of the accident, and, as Ivy’s only relative, she took it upon herself to care for her injured sister. Dorothy always struggled to maintain a balance with her own needs, and her sister’s. Romances were lost, paychecks were stretched, and opportunities for fun and travel were often forgone all in the name of providing for Ivy. However, nearing the few remaining years to have children of her own, Dorothy is becoming increasingly conflicted in her abilities to continue her guardianship. SIDES.
CARL (40, no disability specified, unspecified ethnicity, male) Recently married, for a second time, Carl is happy to help care for Ivy, as long as she’s obedient. He’s a wealthy truck salesman with high status in the Brownwood community. Even though he is very respectful and kind to Dorothy, Carl is a man’s man. Drinks real beer, eats real meat, and believes in survival of the fittest. Perhaps on account of his ideological leanings, Carl resents the baggage that Ivy brings to the new family he wishes to build with Dorothy. SIDES.
MACY (60, no disability specified, Caucasian, male)
Leather-clad biker, tattoo artist, businessman, Macy is a self-described renaissance man. Owner of Macy’s Ink Club, a tattoo parlor in Granning, Texas, Macy has been sincerely satisfied over the past five years with Ivy, his employee with a brain injury. Sure, her task is repetitive and simple, but she’s attentive to detail, and rarely errs. SIDES.
BRUCE (18-50, African American, unspecified developmental disability, male)
Love Land Ranch-Hand. Bruce has been a Love Land “Ranch-Hand” for five years, and he’s adjusting pretty well. He was really attached to his father, who died right before the state placed him in Love Land. His art often portrays buses going down roads that lead to his father. Irritable; chain smokes. SIDES.
MARSHA (40-70, unspecified ethnicity, unspecified developmental disability, female)
Love Land Ranch-Hand. Marsha has lived at the Love Land Ranch since she was a young adult. Her family visits her occasionally from Dallas, but her real family is here at Love Land. She’s been attending Granning Baptist Church ever since she moved into Love Land, and her favorite part of each Sunday is passing by the Love Land Ranch sign and reading the address out loud. SIDES.
